Overview
This module will discuss the impact of domestic violence on animals.
As pets are often considered members of the family, they are regularly
drawn into the cycle of violence as both victims and perpetrators. Threats
to harm pets are used to gain compliance from the victims that love them,
and in many cases, victims will not leave the abuser for fear of what
will happen to pets she cannot bring with her. Domestic violence shelters
have begun to address this problem and are now working with animal shelters
to ensure that all family members can remain safe.
