Responding to Disclosures
of Domestic Violence
You are not responsible for rescuing the victim or fixing their situation!
The victim is a survivor who has asked for help — you can point them in
the right direction. Because you are not a trained professional, a thorough
assessment or couseling session is not your goal. Your response to
a disclosure of domestic violence should consist of 3 things:
1. Empathetic
understanding
2. Providing choices and referrals
3. Lethality checklist/Safety planning
