Conduct mental health assessment of clients Include the routine use of domestic violence screening tools in this assessment. (Discussion of these tools follows)
Provide counseling Work on protection of clients through safety planning/ suicide risk assessment, lethality assessment, protective interventions); problem-solving; and healing of post- traumatic effects of abuse.
Make referrals Understand what specific domestic violence resources are available to your client locally and how effective and responsive they may be.
Offer education Provide education to your client about the impact of domestic violence on her as well as on children in the home. Provide education to the batterer.
Document Results of Assessment & Interventions Include completed instruments in the client’s file as well as copies of safety plans. You may also want to have a copy of any injunction the client has obtained.
Follow-up At every visit reassess your client’s safety and client’s risk to others if you are working with the batterer. Utilize appropriate community resources.
