Routine screening of all children seen in your community mental health center for exposure to violence. Incorporate screening questions as part of history taking. Ask direct questions. Depending upon the child’ age and presenting problem, use direct, indirect or framing question can be used to assess how domestic violence in the home is impacting the child. Make sure that the questions are developmentally appropriate. Document findings in the child’s record. Assess Child’s Safety. Conduct a danger assessment and make appropriate referral to the Department of Children & Families in cases of suspected child abuse. Review Child’s Options and Referrals. Develop a safety plan with the child and the nonabusing parent. Make appropriate referrals for the child and/or nonabusing parent. |
