Signs the Substance Abuse Counselor May Look For

  • Physical injuries (bruises, broken limbs).
  • Medical history of obtaining treatment for injuries from multiple medical providers.
  • History of relapse or non-compliance.
  • Health problems related to stress: headache, backache, chronic pain, gastrointestinal problems, panic attacks.
  • Suicidal ideations or attempts.
  • Pregnancy complications.
  • Documented or reported child abuse perpetrated by client’s partner.
  • Client is forced to sell drugs or prostitute herself for drugs.
  • Client is prevented by partner from obtaining substance abuse treatment or attending 12-step or other self-help meetings.
