The use of substances will have a different impact upon both the victim and the abuser. It is critical for you to recognize the impact upon each party.

Impact of substance abuse on:

Perpetrator of domestic violence
• May increase severity of abuse
• Will use substance abuse impairment as an excuse for battering
• Blackouts or high periods may cause perpetrators to “forget” violent behavior

Victim
• May increase use of substances to cope with abuse
• May be sabotaged in recovery efforts by abuser
• Using may give a false sense of safety or security

Both
• May increase tension in relationship
• May increase danger
• May result in neglect or abuse of children
