Barriers Specific
to Elder Domestic Violence Victims
Victims of domestic violence are often faced with barriers when leaving
an abusive relationship. These barriers are compounded when the victim
is an elderly person. Any disability makes a victim more vulnerable and
less able to defend themselves.
Elderly victims of
domestic violence, particularly elderly women, have great difficulty in
leaving the relationship. There are many factors that contribute to this,
such as those demonstrated in the table that follows.
