Purpose
The purpose of this module is to highlight how domestic violence affects
the nutritional status of pregnant women and their infant children. Many
forms of domestic violence, including physical, emotional, and psychological
abuse, can directly and indirectly lead to poor nutritional outcomes for
the entire family.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this module WIC or other health/nutrition program
staff will be able to:
1. Understand how domestic violence
may impact upon a mother’s ability to obtain
adequate nutrition
during pregnancy.
2. Understand how domestic violence may
impact upon a mother’s ability to
breast-feed or provide
nutrition to an infant.
3. Describe how domestic violence may contribute
to poor nutritional outcomes in
young children resulting
in inadequate physical and mental development.
4. Describe how typical batterer’s behaviors
may contribute to poor pregnancy and
nutritional outcomes,
and the acquisition of good eating habits in children.
