If victims intend to remain in the relationship for the present, it would be wise for them to develop a safety plan, which could be put into effect should they find themselves in immediate danger in the future. Information on safety planning can either be conveyed through distribution of brochures on safety planning or by a brief discussion with a victim considering the following topics:

Safety Planning for Staying / Leaving / Stalkers
Be sure to cover:
      • How to get away
      • How to get help
      • Where to go
      • How to secure where you go
      • How to keep a link to helpers
      • How to get around / transportation
      • How to keep pets safe
      • Protecting what is yours
      • How to stay safe outside of home, at church, for example
      • Anticipating and responding to the abuser’s actions
      • Making an escape bag

If attempting to leave be sure to consider and discuss:
      • Where is the abuser now?
      • When is the abuser expected to return?
      • Does the abuser have any expectations of you? (To answer the phone, etc.)
      • Have you ever left before and what were the consequences?
      • If you tried to leave, what do you think would happen?
