Before
you begin the training, you should become familiar with the terms below,
which are used throughout the manual.
- Victim
- a person who is injured, killed, or harmed in any way by another due
to domestic violence.
- Survivor
- a person who has lived through the experience of victimization or
being the victim of domestic violence.
- Perpetrator
/ Abuser / Batterer - a person who carries out or commits acts
of domestic violence against another.
- Behavior
- actions, reactions, demeanor or conduct under specified circumstances.
- Control
- to exercise authority or influence over another person; to dominate
another person.
- Dependence
- the condition of being dependent, influenced, or controlled by another
person; relying on or requiring aid form another for support.
- Intimate
- marked by close personal acquaintance, familiarity, and / or privacy.
- Isolation
- being separate from other people; being set apart from others; being
kept from interacting with others.
- Partner
- a spouse or a mate.
- Psychological
- pertaining to the mental processes, and emotional and behavioral characteristics
of a person.
- Subservient
- a person who is subject to the authority and control of another; a
person in the position or rank of being submissive to another.
- Victimization
- the act of making another person a victim by subjecting them to any
form of domestic violence.
- Batterer’s
Intervention Program - an educational and / or therapeutic program,
attended by batterers, aimed at changing the violent and abusive behaviors
of domestic violence perpetrators.
- Certified Domestic Violence Shelter - a shelter providing living quarters and other services to victims of domestic violence in need of a place to stay. Each shelter has been certified by the Department of Children and Families as specified under Florida law.
