Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Below are a links to a series of videos you may find helpful, as well as a Presidential Proclamation calling on everyone to get involved in efforts to prevent and end domestic violence:

  1. The website When Love Hurts has released a series of videos that cover essential information from the “When Love Hurts” Support Groups. Some of the topics covered in these videos include the different types of abuse, the patterns of abuse, and the impact of abuse.
  2. On October 1st, President Obama signed a Proclamation calling on all Americans to “renew our efforts to support victims of domestic violence in their time of greatest need, and to realize an America where no one lives in fear because they feel unsafe in their own home.” Read the rest of this Presidential Proclamation here.

Be sure to participate in or attend local events to support your local certified domestic violence shelter and help prevent and end domestic violence in your community.

  1. At 7:00 pm on October 30th, the Florida State University Women’s Center will be hosting a Healthy Dating Relationships event, including a panel discussion featuring Karen Oehme, at the Oglesby Student Union.
  2. Last week, the Leon County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council co-sponsored an event with the Institute for Family Violence Studies called Behind the Door. This event saw the community march from three locations and arrive to hear two amazing speakers share their stories of survival.
